Ontario SPCA & Bed, Bath & Beyond

My time at Bed, Bath & Beyond for Holiday Pet Photos to raise money for OSPCA is now done and it was amazing. So many people came to visit with a wide variety of pets (that included a hamster and snake!). But I want to tell you why is was so important for me to be part of these 3 weekends.

I had grown up always having one in the house and now I was living on my own, I felt like something was missing. So on January 11, 2008 I made a trip to the Ottawa Humane Society in hopes of finding a perfect match.

Piper, Jan 11/08

That night I met an incredibly handsome man named Piper. He was approximately 5 years old, a German Shepherd mix and no known history due to being a lost dog. The picture above is the night I brought him home.

Although he was initially a very independent pup, he soon became my sidekick and a lap dog. I was privileged to spend 9 years with him and, to hopefully, have made a positive change in his life. I know he did in mine!

But, if your local Humane Society is not the route you would like to take to adopt a new furry family member, there are other rescues.

Nina, a potcake from Dominican Republic

As an example, this is Nina, a potcake rescued about 18 months ago from Dominican Republic via Freedom Dog Rescue. Her parents informed me that it has taken her a while to adjust to a new life in Canada, but she’s doing amazing. Her parents were happy to help Ontario SPCA.

No matter what rescue you decide to go with, ensure you do thorough research. And remember, #adoptdontshop!
